Not long ago, I began a job hunt that I knew could potentially last for months. I was fairly new to the tech world and, being self-taught, anticipated that my journey to join a company would be a rather difficult one.

But then, I stumbled on Whitetruffle.

Hmm, a service that matched me to companies based on my profile and sent me email notifications when I had promising opportunities available? I was a bit skeptical, I thought it was too good to be true.

Little did I know that two weeks after being introduced by Whitetruffle to a small startup in San Francisco, I would be feeling right at home, working as a legitimate part of the team.You guys helped me get on my career path and I couldn’t be happier.

Applying Lean Startup Methodology to Coffee Roasting

Being lean is more than a business strategy - it’s a lifestyle. It’s a great way to find product/market fit. It’s also the best way to learn how to make the best possible coffee.

Last year, I started roasting my own beans using nothing but a heavy pot on the stove. With small batches using only a half-cup of green coffee beans at a time, I was able to speed my way through many Build/Measure/Learn cycles to arrive at my perfect cup of coffee.

(Ideas) I like coffee. I should roast my own. This desire does not make me a hipster at all.

Build: Put beans in pot. Apply heat. Stir constantly. Fill the house with acrid smoke. Feel bad for housemates.

(Product) I think I roasted coffee. Possibly drinkable?

Measure: Brew and drink ALL THE COFFEE.

(Data) Take tasting notes, noting bean variety and darkness of roast.

Learn: Adjust darkness of roast and variety as needed. Also, open all the doors and windows and turn on the stove vent. And maybe say something about how someone else must have burnt a lot of toast or set something plastic on fire.

Things I learned during the process:

* Raw coffee beans taste terrible.

* The reason I generally prefer as dark a roast as I do when going to coffee chains is because a dark roast easily covers up low bean quality. I roast a lot lighter at home to be able to taste the unique flavors of the beans.

* Different bean origins have vastly different flavors - with pretty consistent themes by region. Ethiopian coffee is almost universally going to be light, bright, and fruity. Guatemalan coffee (my favorite) is all about chocolate and brown sugar.

* Roasting is more about exercising your sense of hearing than of smell. After a few tries you get very good at hearing the difference between the first crack stage (coffee sounds like popping popcorn) and the second crack stage (pouring milk over Rice Crispies) and gauging how long into the second crack you are.

Attracting - and Retaining - Female Engineers

It’s Women’s History Month. Every year it seems there are an even greater number of articles and blog posts on women in the workplace. This year, “Why aren’t there more women in tech?” seems to be the most popular variation on the theme. As the Fairy Queen at Whitetruffle, I have been asked by multiple companies about what they can do to attract and hire more women in tech. There is no one right answer to give. Many companies have tried different approaches. Etsy sponsored hackathons and focused on creating easy opportunities for women wanting to transition into more technical roles. Cristina at Stripe tells startups that they need to pay more attention to the language they use in postings and conduct themselves with more awareness of gender dynamics. Some say we just need more mirrors and tampons around the office.

Lydia Loizides, CEO and Founder of GGGrit, a startup on a mission to build software products and services that help women build their career capital, was kind enough to talk to me about what she has noticed with women, tech, and career advancement.

Women and the Marzipan Layer

Lydia has spent her career in male dominated sectors - product development, engineering, and finance. Ten years ago, when Lydia was first starting her career, there were a few women around her in her divisions and many more in the rest of the organization. As she advanced, the gender ratio shifted dramatically. Many women got stuck, or actively chose to stay, in the marzipan layer. In talking to these women, she found that this was often because they were less willing to sacrifice work/life balance. This leads us to ask whether what women feel they need for this kind of balance is really not workable - or if women are simply not seeing enough examples of people who have been able to negotiate flexibility into their management and leadership roles.

What Women Need to Advance

Lydia sees a need to establish formal mentoring and sponsorship relationships for incoming female talent. Providing clear examples of female peers who have made advancement work - and are willing to advocate for their progress - can change the idea that advancement means giving up having a healthy family life. This means that both men and women need to work together to help the next generation advance. Lydia is also a firm believer in life-long education. Learning shouldn’t stop once you graduate. We all need to focus on building the skills and intelligence to succeed at what we do.

How Startup Culture Helps Women

Startup culture is unique in its openness. The very same qualities that allow for quick progress and endless iteration can be put to work to create an environment that helps women learn a broad range of skills quickly while building the work culture they want. Becoming comfortable with risk, learning from honest input and feedback, and developing strong negotiation and collaboration skills are key skills startups can teach.

Attracting Female Engineers

I have noticed the trend towards branding many entry-level tech classes as being “for women” and have heard frustration from female engineers around the difficulty they have in finding woman-focused tech groups doing anything *other* than offering intro classes. I asked Lydia if she saw a mature enough ecosystem to support more technically advanced groups and networks for women. From what she has seen, the beginner focus does seem to reflect the current female talent pool. Most of the women in tech companies she comes across will have somewhere around 0-3 years of work experience and tend to focus on frontend development.

Where all industries are challenged is finding ways to grow and retain women for the long-term in computer sciences and engineering. What does this mean if you want to hire more female engineers? Have a system for career development tailored to women’s advancement in mind. Lydia suggests formal training in management skills as particularly helpful for female engineers. This will benefit the company overall by increasing job satisfaction, lowering turnover, increasing employee loyalty - and building an environment where women can see themselves creating the careers they want.

Tomorrow, at least for people who use the completely nonsensical American version of date notation, is 3/14 - Pi Day! San Francisco has the dual advantages of (1) making anything into an excuse for a party and (2) being just a bit geeky. There are so many places to celebrate in the city tomorrow!

The Exploratorium will be hosting it’s 25th Annual Pi Day Celebration at their new location near Pier 15. According to their site, “We’ll serve up slices of pie, share pi-related activities, host a Pi Parade, and ceremoniously install our new Pi Shrine into a fittingly circular site outside Pier 15.

In addition, we are excited to present Pi in the Sky by ISHKY in collaboration with AirSign. At 10,000 feet above our new building, a team of five synchronized aircraft equipped with dot-matrix technology will skywrite the first 1,000 digits of Pi’s infinite sequence (weather permitting), offering an ephemeral, elevated experience of the famous transcendental number.”

The California Academy of Science has a specially-themed NightLife: “Celebrate the glory of pi and pie with a night of mathematical merriment, and pie tastings and demonstrations. Get irrational in the “pi zone” with fun math activities from UC Berkeley’s Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, then grab a hula hoop and contemplate the ratio of its circumference to its diameter as you gyrate. Rationalize the nutritional value of a slice in the “Pie Zone” with samples from Whole Foods and Peasant Pies, a pie-making demonstration by the Academy Cafe, and an activity from the dough-wranglers at Pie Ranch. In the planetarium, learn about the unheard music of planetary motion in a special presentation titled Music of the Spheres at 6:30, followed by two showings of Earthquake. Music by the DJs of LoveTech.”
